Gov Docs: Report on For-Profit Colleges

The Government Accountability Office, a watchdog agency, recently released a report in which it found that private for-profit colleges “encouraged fraud and engaged in deceptive and questionable marketing practices.” Government investigators posing as potential students were encouraged to falsify their federal financial aid applications at 4 of 15 colleges visited, and all 15 colleges made deceptive or misleading statements about costs of the programs, graduation rates, and salaries after graduation. The report also found that “programs at the for-profit colleges GAO tested cost substantially more for associate’s degrees and certificates than comparable degrees and certificates at public colleges nearby.”
