New Loan Policies for Faculty

Effective June 1, 2009, the Library will be revising its loan policies for CSUSB faculty who check out materials. These policies have been reviewed and approved by the Library Committee of the Faculty Senate, and reported to the Faculty Senate.

Specifically, Library materials checked out on or after this date by full-time, tenure track faculty, will now be due six months from the check out date. For example, if a full-time faculty member checks out a book on June 2, it will now be due on or around December 2. In addition, two weeks prior to the due date, faculty will receive a courtesy notice via email reminding them of their due date, and that the materials may be renewed online. Materials kept by full-time faculty for twelve consecutive months will need to be physically brought back to the Library for subsequent renewal.

Library materials checked out by part-time CSUSB faculty will be due three months from the check out date. For example, if a part-time faculty member checks out a book on June 3, it will now be due on or around September 3. Two weeks prior to the due date, part-time faculty will receive a courtesy notice via email reminding them of their due date, and that the materials may be renewed online. Materials kept by part-time faculty for six consecutive months will need to be physically brought back to the Library for subsequent renewal.

The above policies do not apply to Library materials with shorter loan periods, including, but not limited to DVDs, videos, Featured Books, Bound Periodical volumes, Current Periodicals, audiobooks, and materials received via Interlibrary Loan.

The advantages are:

  • Faculty will not have to return all their materials on one artificial fixed date, such as May 31.
  • Faculty will have consistent loan periods, regardless of when they check out an item.
  • Faculty will be able to renew their materials online at the end of the first loan period.

Please note that materials checked out by full-time, tenure track faculty, prior to May 1, 2009, will be due back to the Library on May 31, 2009. These materials will need to be physically brought back to the Library for return or renewal. Faculty who check out or renew materials during the month of May, will be “grandfathered” in, and will have either the six or three month check out period, depending on their full or part-time status.
