Movie Reviews: North By North LesThe Wire

HBO, 2004-2008

Five stars.

With the city of Baltimore featured prominently in the news, this reviewer thought it timely to feature this series which focuses on a different institution in Baltimore and its relationship to law enforcement. Over the course of five seasons, the following are covered: the illegal drug trade, the seaport system, the city government and bureaucracy, the public school system, and the print news media. Former Baltimore Sun police reporter and creator, David Simon, has said that the series is more than a crime drama, and is really about the American city, its institutions, and its effect on individuals. An ensemble of excellent character actors, led by Dominic West, playing Officer Jimmy McNulty. Other notable breakout actors are: Michael K. Williams (Boardwalk Empire), Idris Elba (Luther, Mandela), Lance Reddick (Fringe), Amy Ryan (Birdman), and others are featured in the series. The series title is said to serve as a metaphor for the viewer’s experience, as wiretaps give police access to the secret world of criminals, just as the series does for the viewer. Acclaimed by numerous television critics as one of the best drama series of all time, The Wire, has also been cited by then Senator Barack Obama as his favorite TV series. Highly recommended, you won’t be disappointed! See the record for The Wire.
