The Library of Congress recently named California poet and activist Juan Felipe Herrera as the new Poet Laureate of the United States. He is the first Mexican American to receive this honor and a former Poet Laureate of the State of California. He has ties to the Inland Empire as well, having served as the Tomás Rivera Endowed Chair in the creative writing department at UC Riverside until retiring this year. The Academy of American Poets calls him “a leading voice on the Mexican American and indigenous experience.”
